18 c) when water fills the space between the object and the lens, the wavelength of the light passing through decreases. This is because the refractive index of water is higher than air, decreasing the speed of light in water as compared to air, and this in turn decreases wavelength of the light. As explained in part b smaller wavelength corresponds to smaller resolving power, hence the resolving power of the microscope decreases.

Hope this helps.
