Divide the salary for each person equally with its corresponding denominator.
Mr Tan's total salary must be divided by its denominator. In this case, $4200 divided by 5. As he only saves 1/5 of his salary, he would have saved $840.
Mrs Tan's total salary must be divided by its denominator. In this case, $3600 divided by 8. As she only saves 1/8 of her salary, she would have saved $450.
Add both savings together as it is asked for the total savings per month, and it will be: $840 + $450 = $1290.
