Hi Melissa,
This question involves a bit of visualization.
Because the wood is dipped in red paint before it is cut, only the outer layer of the wood has red pain.
In other words, only the inner layers of the wood is totally clean.
So long as a cube has some red paint on it, we have to exclude it.
Therefore, we have to deduct 2 from the number of cubes from each side of the cube (I.e. Lengthwise, heightwise and breadthwise)
