to solve a complex function, determine which function is on the ‘inside’ of the complex function. in this case,f(x) is the ‘inside’ and g(x) is the ‘outside’ so you treat f(x) as the variable in the ‘outside’ function, hence sub f(x) into g(x) (f(x) is the ‘x’ to be put into g(x))
