(a) Some of the steel clips were attracted to the iron nail.
(b) Before the iron nail was magnetised, the magnet would attract the iron nail. But after it was magnetised, the magnet would attract the iron nail if unlike poles were facing each other. If like poles were facing each other, they would repel each other.
