Honestly... its a dumb question because you only cover combustion and substitution reactions for alkanes...

Hence, my guess for the answer to the setters question would be:
Bromine / chlorine vapour decolourises when mixed with a gaseous sample, when exposed to U.V. light

Factual method used in real life, is the info in the posted picture... or natural gas detectors (electronic device)
