Things to take note:
1. Question reads "liquid octane/ ethanol" so their state symbols are given
2. Water vapour is formed so be careful not to assign state symbol (l), when it should be (g)
3. The number of C in octane or ethanol determines the coefficient (no. in front) of carbon dioxide. Example, C2H5OH - since there are 2 C, 2 CO2 is formed.
4. Balance C, then H. Calculate total number of O on right hand side and balance by placing number in front of O2.
All the best!
