The original water level reached two-fifths or 40% of the tank's height.

The water level rose by
8400 ml
-------------------- = 4cm
50cm x 42 cm

4cm is a quarter of the original water level, meaning 10% of the tank's height.

Hence the height of the water tank is 40cm.
