Total number of beads left over if Lyn had taken the same number of beads as Irene = 52 - 12 = 40
If Lyn had taken the same number of beads as Irene, the number of beads left = 1 - 3/8 + 3/8 = 2/8
2 units = 40
1 unit = 20
8 units = 160
Keep in mind this 160 is after Kathleen took 2/7 of the beads. Which means that the 160 is the 5/7 leftover.
5 Units = 160
1 Unit = 32
7 Units = 224
Since the total number of beads before any withdrawal was made is 224,
224 - 52 = 172
