The scale is for 1 length.
For area, double the scaling as you apply scaling for both lengths.
Actual area of river
= 2.5 * 40000 * 40000
= 4000 000 000cm^2

Area on new map
= 4000 000 000 / (25000 * 25000)
= 6.4cm^2 //

B) first convert km^2 to cm^2,
And then convert into map distance.
1.2km^2
= 1.2 * 1000 * 1000 m^2
= 1200000m^2
= 1200000 * 100 * 100 cm^2
= 12 000 000 000cm^2

:. Area on map
= 12 000 000 000 / (25000* 25000) cm^2
= 19.2cm^2
