Algebra method:
Total amount spent = Cost of first 8 chips + cost of all additional chips
Let x be the number of additional chips bought,
Total amount spent = 5 + 2x = 30
2x = 25
x = 12.5
However, since x has to be a whole number (cookies), x can only go up to 12.
So total chips bought = 8 + 12 = 20
Total spent = 5 + 12(2) = $29
