Hi Emily, your diagram is cut off. May I know what's in the set up on the right? Is it also water? Or does it says "Substance X"?

Carbon dioxide will take in by the plants to undergo photosynthesis ( the method that plants make their own food )
The end product of photosynthesis is Oxygen is the first set up the plants take in Carbon dioxide from the normal water and release back Oxygen into the water
For 2nd set up Carbon dioxide is absorb by the substances X thus there is no Carbon dioxide in the liquid submerged the plant thus photosynthesis cannot occur and oxygen cannot produce by the plant
Hopefully this is correct :)
11a) not going to give you the direct answer here but consider the sites for gaseous exchange in a leaf. Need to also compare the underside and upperside.

11b) there are no gases collected because there is substance X in (the set-up on the right). Substance X absorbs CO2 in the water thus preventing the plant from __________ as _________ is needed for ___________. The plant can only _________, taking in __________ dissolved in the water and giving out CO2 which is also absorbed by Substance X. (need to mention the gases involved for both photosynthesis and respiration)
