We start by asking:
How much money she makes when she completes her first set of 40 keychains?
When 40 keychains completed, she gains:
(40×0.5) + 12 = $32
So we work upwards...
2 sets of 40 keychains = $64
3 sets of 40 keychains = $96
.
.
8 sets of 40 keychains = $256 (now just short of $4)
[The last $4 will be earned by making 8 keychains]
So total keychains = (8×40) + 8 = 328 keychains.

I think perhaps they had difficulty making the leap (I'm not too sure how to re-communicate this).

Hmm I guess that can be done. Students at P5 are sometimes unsure of how to make sense of the grouping concept
