Hi!

You may rewrite 5/8 as 10/16.
He spent 10/16 of total on magazine and 7 pens.

If each pen costs 1/6 of the remaining money (6/16), that means each pen costs 1/16 of his total money.

So among his original money spent, he spent:
7 pens = 7/16 of total
Magazine = 3/16 of total

If all the pens is $16 more than magazine, that means $16 = (7-3)/16 or 4/16 of total

Total money will then be 16 × 4 = $64.

Hope this helps!
