Hi, can someone help me with question 5c, why is it not a polynomial? Thanks in advance!

You have to be clear on what defines a polynomial first.


The answer for 5c) is :

(6x⁴ - 3x³ - 28x² - x - 10) / (3 - 2x)

= -3x³ - 3x² + 19/2 x + 59/4 - 217/(4(3 - 2x))

There is a remainder of -217/4 and thus as we can see, the expression has a reciprocal of 3 - 2x in the last term (its in the denominator.)


For that term, we are dividing by a variable so the whole expression cannot be considered a polynomial.
