I don't know if it is algebra but it is herustics. It is to restate the problem which I don't know how to do.

A: 6 brushes and 5 palettes cost $17.
B: 3 brushes and 2 palettes cost $8.
What if we make the number of brushes the same in both cases?
If we realise, 2 complete sets of B will also get us 6 brushes.
A: 6 brushes and 5 palettes cost $17.
B: 6 brushes and 4 palettes cost $16.
The difference between the two cases is only the one extra palette which costs $1.
B: 3 brushes and 2 palettes cost $8.

Algebra can be used, but certainly not at the P6 level. You will need a Secondary 2 level of algebra to solve this question using algebra.
