4x2 - y2 + 4y - 4

In this special scenario, we do a 3-1 one grouping instead of a 2-2 grouping.

4x2 - y2 + 4y - 4
= 4x2 - (y2 - 4y + 4)
= (2x)^2 - (y - 2)^2
= A^2 - B^2 where A = 2x and B = y - 2
= (A + B) (A - B)
= (2x + y - 2) [2x - (y - 2)]
= (2x + y - 2) (2x - y + 2)

If we did 2-2 factorisation, we would not go anywhere, ie

4x2 - y2 + 4y - 4
= (2x + y) (2x - y) + 4 (y - 1)

and we would be at a dead end.
