$(31/60 x) is based on the expression on the previous line. We let x be total number of fruits. 1/3 of x are oranges, 1/4 of x are apples and the rest (5/12) are pears. The table also shows the cost of each of the fruits. Using the information, you can come up with the expression.

Use fraction of 12 to denote the amount of fruit bought. Use the expression of unknown unit. Then divide the total cost by the cost of the units to find the amount of fruit within one unit.
