Left side triangle has base 4 units and height 1 unit.
Right triangle has base 3 units and height 4 units.

This means that the left side triangle has base 4 cm and height 1 cm.

Recall that for a triangle, its area is given by 1/2 x base x height where the base and height are at right angles to each other.

Its area
= 1/2 times 4 times 1
= 2 cm²

The right triangle has base 3 cm and height 4 cm. Yes, even though the height is "out of the triangle", it still works.

Its area
= 1/2 times 3 times 4
= 6 cm²

Total area
= 2 + 6
= 8 cm²
