Anyone knows how to solve this by using sum & products of roots?

Since the question states that the roots differ by 1, there are 2 possibilities:
(1) x=a (smaller root) & x=a+1 (bigger root)
(2) x=a-1 (smaller root) & x=a (bigger root)

If you use (2), you will end up with a=-1 or a=-2. You will need to reject a=-1 because if you substitute x=-1 into the given quadratic equation, the left side will be 2, will the right side will be 0 (which is impossible).
