May I clarify why y-0/x-(-5) is equivalent to the gradient -1/2?

It should be Y-0/X-(-5), not y-0/x-(-5).
Capital Y denotes the vertical axis, in this case, Y=y. Capital X denotes the horizontal axis, in this case, X=1/x^3.
Capital Y and X forms a straight line, so Y-0/X-(-5) = gradient of the straight line = -1/2.
Cap Y and X are for workings only, actual variables are small y and x.
