We can think of like this :

The girls originally in the group each have their height 'increased' by 2cm

(164cm - 162cm = 2cm)

The new girl's height 'decreased' by 12cm
(176cm - 164cm = 12cm)

Treat it as though as the new girl 'donated' her excess 12cm height to the girls in the group.

Since each of them gained 2cm,

Number of girls originally in the group
= 12cm ÷ 2cm
= 6

Number of girls in the group in in the end
= 6 + 1(the new girl)
= 7

Think of it this way:
1) Someone who is 14cm taller than average joined the group
2) This extra 14cm will be "redistributed" to everyone in the group, such that everyone's height increases by 2 cm
3) How many 2 cm can I "distribute" 14 cm into?
