Perimeter = Same as 14 sides of a square
= y cm
1 side of square = y/14 cm
Area of figure = total area of 8 squares
= 8 x side length x side length
= y cm²
So y cm² = 8 × y/14 cm × y/14 cm
y = 2y²/49
49y = 2y²
2y² - 49y = 0
y(2y - 49) = 0
y = 0 (rejected since length is positive)
or
2y - 49 = 0
2y = 49
y = 49/2 = 24½
= y cm
