This means that ratio of
books : magazines = 5 : 4

Books are packed into bundles of 10.
Magazines are packed into bundles of 6.

He had 2 more bundles of magazines than books.

Number of magazines in this 2 bundles
= 6 magazines x 2
= 12 magazines


But if we separate this 2 bundles, and compare the rest of the magazine bundles and book bundles only,

the number of bundles is the same for both kinds.

Since each magazine bundle has 6 magazines and each book bundle has 10 books,


6/10 = 3/5

The number of magazines in 1 magazine bundle is 3/5 that of the number of books in 1 book bundle.

The fraction is always the same when comparing equal number of magazines bundles and book bundles

2 magazine bundles : 12 magazines
2 book bundles : 20 books

12 / 20 = 3/5

100 magazine bundles : 600 magazines
100 book bundles : 1000 books

600/1000 = 6/10 = 3/5



Since all the books are in bundles and the total number = 5 units

Then no. of magazines in the same number of bundles
= 3 units (3/5 of that 5 units)


Since there are 4 units of magazines in total,

Number of magazines in that 2 separate bundles
= 4 units - 3 units
= 1 unit

So 1 unit = 12 magazines

Alternatively, list multiples/bundles of 6 and 10. But add 2 bundles (12 magazines) to the multiples of 6 afterwards.



Multiples/bundles of 6 :

6,12,18,24,30,36,42,48,54,60

Add 12 for the 2 extra bundles to get total number of magazines :

18,24,30,36,42,48,54,60,66,72

Multiples/bundles of 10 :

10,20,30,40,50,60,70,80,90,100


The only combination
(for the same number of bundles of each category before adding that 12 in) that can give the correct ratio of total magazines to books is :

48 magazines and 60 books

48 : 60
= 24 : 30
= 12 : 15
= 4 : 5
