For part c, there is a shortcut to calculate.
You can list down like what I did for the differences, then do multiples of 2 to arrive at the answer. Instead of using total squares minus shaded squares (using +4 method)

Comformed the king of math
For b) use (F×4)-2
When F=10
=(10×4)-2
= 38.
c) Total square = 17×17= 289
Shaded square = (16×4)-2= 62
Therefore, unshaded square= 289-62 =227
