Why the answer not 500?

Because the 23 cm side can fit in 11, rather than 10, of such cubes.

In other words, we can fit in

10 x 11 x 5, or

550 cubes.

Number of cubes that can be fitted along 20cm side

= 20cm ÷ 2cm
= 10

Number of cubes that can be fitted along 10cm side

= 10cm ÷ 2cm
= 5

Number of cubes that can be fitted along 23cm side

= 23cm ÷ 2cm
= 11 R 2


Total number of cubes that can be fitted
= 11 x 10 x 5
= 110 x 5
= 550

Yes. Sometimes calculation too fast.

To be more accurate, 11 R 1cm

23➗2 = 11 R 1
10 ➗2 = 5
10 x 11 x 5 = 550 ( 2 cm cubes)
( you must only take the quotients and multiply) not the remainder
