P(x) has degree 3 coz the highest power if x is 3. It means it should have 3 roots. Since one root is given in (a), the factor is the root, remaining 2 roots will be "no real roots" condition, ie D < 0.

From part (b), you already found another factor Q(x). In order for P(x) has only 1 real root, which is 1/2, Q(x) shall have no real roots. So examine the discriminant D of Q(x) and solve D<0 to obtain the range of a.
