40 - (3 sin x + 4 cos x)^2
= 40 - [5 sin (x + taninv 4/3)]^2

For maximum,

5 sin (x + taninv 4/3) = 0
x + taninv 4/3 = 180, 360, ...

You should be getting the two answers you obtained.

You can always resubstitute your answers for validity.

The minimum case works when sin (x + taninv 4/3) is +- 1.
