There are a total of 4000 numbers there. We put them as 2000 pairs of 2 numbers in this manner.

(4000 - 3999) + (3998 - 3997) + (3996 - 3995) + ... + (4 - 3) + (2 - 1)
= 1 + 1 + 1 + ... + 1
(there are 2000 of them)
= 2000
