Work done = force x distance travelled by force
Since you are applying an upward force similar in magnitude as the weight, the distance should consider is the upward distance not the diagonal distance.

Similarly, if a person weighs 50kg, weight of 500N. The work done for running up the stairs will be 500 x vertical distance not the actual distance travelled.
