Why 1.25 /2???
Is 2.50/2
2 pencils—> $2.50
1 pencil—-> 2.50/2 = $1.25
Total = 7 pencils
= 7 x $1.25
= $8.75.
2 pencils—> $2.50
1 pencil—-> 2.50/2 = $1.25
Total = 7 pencils
= 7 x $1.25
= $8.75.

It is not clear why 2 pencil is 2.50?
This is because Farah has enough money to buy 5pens or 7pencils. This means that the price of 5pens, is equal to the price of 7pencils. Hence, since the big bar represents the total price, the bar of 5pens should be the same for the bar of 7pencils.
Now looking at the samller bars, since each pen cost $0.50 more then each pencil, the smaller bar for pens is longer than the smaller bar for pencil. Since there is already 5smaller bars drawn for the pencils, the remaining shaded areas must be for the remaining 2pencils (as there is a total of 7 pencils).
