If you square both equations, the resultant expressions will be identical. However, currently the expressions are not identical if you extend the curve beyond 2pi.

This is because sin (x/2) goes into the negative region from 2pi to 4pi. On the other hand, the square rooted expression will always have a positive value, so it cannot possibly be equal to sin (x/2) in that interval.
