Thus when we want to subtract brian - eric.
270u+ 24 - 60u +12= 222
But why is it 270u + 24 -60u - 12?

Yeah.. i realize too for primary school level a bit difficult to explain.
We know Eric have 60u and 12.
We minus away all, i.e -60u and -12
So, 270u +24u -60u -12 = 222
In secondary school, we use brackets
270u +24 - (60u+12) = 222
In reality,
-(60u + 12) is equal to -1(60u+12)
So,
-1 x 60u and -1x12 give you -60u -12
We know Eric have 60u and 12.
We minus away all, i.e -60u and -12
So, 270u +24u -60u -12 = 222
