Here's a more elaborated version of it.
The concept of average is about equal distribution.
If that's the case, you would realise that Faith's number of candies is 4 less than the average. As such, the other 2 friends have to give a total of 4 candies to him so that he can get the average. So what remain for the 2 friends would be (10+30)-4=36. Then, they can share the 36 to get the average 18.
So Faith actually has 18 - 4 =14.
Hopefully, this helps you to understand those steps. Because I am concern whether the algebra method is accepted in primary level.

A simple situation. If you have 20 candies and your friends has 24 candies, he just have to give you 2 candies so that you and him can both get the average 22.

Alternative method is to use algebra which is shown to you by the other tutors. You will learn more of algebra in secondary school. 8-)
