5. (A) Pressure exerted by liquid is given by
h x rho x g where h is depth, rho is density, g is acceleration due to gravity. Pressure is not affected by shape of container nor area of base. Since (A) has highest column, therefore pressure at base of A is the greatest.
6. (B) Same explanation as for Q5.
for (A), pressure = 25 x 1 x g = 25g
for (B), pressure = 25 x 13.6 x g = 340g
for (C), pressure = 50 x 0.8 x g = 40g
for (D), pressure = 50 x 1 x g = 50g
7. (C) Need to measure the height of the column of mercury, which is the difference between level inside the tube and level of the surface of the reservoir.
8. (D) If mercury level in reservoir drops due to evaporation, the level in the tube drops as well, but the difference of 2 levels remain the same, meaning that the height of the column remains the same.
