(2) because friction and motion should be the same amount. Let's say I use 1 unit to push a pencil. The friction should be 1 unit too.

Of course force A must equal to force C. Imagine force C is more than force A. Then the boat will be pulled down into the sea and it will therefore sink. And if force A is more than force C, the ship will move up mid air.

However, forces B and D may not be the same, depending on how the ship moves. I won’t go into great detail for this as it requires a secondary level idea.

Note that if “friction” and “motion” is always the same amount, the ship will never be able to move faster.
