The key is to work backwards. Since she had 1 unit of red in the end, she will have 1u+45 red at first. As for blue, she had 3 units in the end. The question said she used 40% of blue beads, which means that the 3u is 60% of the original number of beads she had in the first place which is 5 units. Add both the red and blue she had at first, which is 6u+45 which is equals to 285.
