By bringing the pivot closer to the left, two things happen.

1. The anticlockwise moment for the cork is reduced, because the force on the cork remains unchanged but the distance from the spring to the pivot is smaller.

2. By the principle of moments, the clockwise moment must be equal to the new anticlockwise moment, so the clockwise moment is now smaller than before.

3. Because of the new position of the pivot, the distance between the force at B and the pivot is now lengthened, so an even smaller force is needed at B to generate the new value for the clockwise moment.
