Try to simplify the problem by first finding the distance between 2 black dots and 2 red dots first.

Then, we try to formulate a pattern using an example of just 4 black dots. We find that to find the distance between 4 black dots, we take the distance between 2 black dots multiply by 3. This is because we take the total number of black dots, which is 4, minus 1. (See the example)

Then, since we don’t know the total number of black and red dots, we use a random letter to denote the number of red dots first, which is y. Since there are 32 more black dots, number of black dots is y + 32.
