39^2 + 78 + 1
= 39^2 + 2 (39) + 1^2
= x^2 + 2x + 1 where x = 39
= (x + 1)^2 where x = 39
= (39 + 1)^2
= 40^2
= 1600
= 39^2 + 2 (39) + 1^2
= x^2 + 2x + 1 where x = 39
= (x + 1)^2 where x = 39
= (39 + 1)^2
= 40^2
= 1600

But the qn said without the calculator. So it need to have working
oops u didn't specify, then hopefully it's :
39^2 = ( 3 x 13 )^2
= 9 x 169
= 1521
1521+78+1 = 1600
