Since (a+b)^2 = a^2 + 2ab + b^2

Their expecting you to apply substitution of the values given in the question to find 3(x+y)^2

If you expand 3(x+y)^2, it will be 3x^2 + 6xy + 3y^2

From there, you should rearrange the variables so its easier to understand, 3x^2 + 6xy + 3y^2 = 3x^2 + 3y^2 + 6xy

Now it should be easier to understand, from here all you have to do is sub in the values given in the questions so you will end up with :

3(14) + 6(5) = *72*

Replace a with x and b with y to find (×+y)^2 using special product rule.
