To eliminate surds in the denominator, we introduce what we call the conjugate of the expression. Two expressions in the form a + b and a - b are said to be conjugates of each other.
So, if your surd-containing denominator is in the form a + b, you introduce a - b to BOTH the numerator and the denominator to keep equality on the fraction and to eliminate surds in the denominator. There is no restriction on surds in the numerator, however.
