40% of B is shaded.
Since 40% = 40/100 = 4/10 = 2/5,
2/5 of B is shaded.
Ratio of A area to B area = 3 : 5
We can say area of B is 5 units.
So shaded area = 2 units since 2/5 of B is shaded.
(Or 5 units x 2/5 = 2 units
Or 5 units ÷ 5 x 2 = 1 unit x 2 = 2 units)
Total area of figure
= Area A + Area B - one shaded area (to avoid double-counting the overlapping area)
= 3 units + 5 units - 2 units
= 8 units - 2 units
= 6 units
Unshaded area = Total area - shaded area
= 6 units - 2 units
= 4 units
Percentage of figure that is unshaded
= 4/6 x 100 %
= 400/6 %
= 66.66666... %
≈ 66.67 %
