note that right side has a function f(x) and the question does not state what is f(x), so there is no way to work out the value of f(x).
by factorizing x^2 + 3x - 4, we note that if we substitute x = 1 or x =-4, we can get rid of f(x), because 0 times anything gives you 0.
we are left with 2 equations and 2 unknowns.
for solving the 2 simultaneous equations, it is straight forward, so I believe that you can fill in the detail steps by yourself.
