This is an unchanged difference question.

The difference in their ages is always the same, 8 years. As one person grows a year older, so will the other person.

Since we are looking for the time when Kit was 3 times as old as Jane,

Kit's age would have been 3 units, and Jane's 1 unit

Difference = 3 - 1 = 2 units

So 2 units = 8 years
1 unit = 8 years ÷ 2 = 4 years

So this means Jane was 4 years old back then.

Since she is 10 years old now,

10 - 4 = 6

It was 6 years ago.

The equation is formed as it was predicted that kit’s age will be thrice of jane’s age around x years ago.
