suboptimal method. also, why accept y=1? Sub y=1 in the given equation and immediately the first term yields 5/0 which is undefined.

By making the equations negative, u are like flipping the algebra, for example at first is (x-y) and when it is negative, it is
-(y-x). You would not want the negative sign to be in the denominator so you can put the negative at the numerator and the value is still the same. Hope this help:)
