Good evening Candice! We do cancellations for common terms. This is called the method of differences.

The terms have already been rewritten as as 3/2(2x + 1) - 3/2(2x + 3) in the first part.

In the second part, should either factor out 3/2 or use same form, instead of writing the fraction with the numerator as a fraction as well. That's inconsistent presentation.

Actually the fraction should be in the numerator as well, since the first part requires us to put in the form A / (2x + 1) where A happens to be a fraction.

Maybe factoring out 3/2 is safer.

Exactly. I was wondering why you even rewrote it.

Because usually final answers for a partial fraction is to be expressed as one fraction only, rather than having a “fraction in a fraction”.

For the second part, writing as 3/2 on top is easier to see than writing with the 2 being part of the denominator.
