Realise that the two squares are identical and the two rectangles are identical.
AB and DE are equal to the length of a square so AB and DE = 2cm
Area of upper shaded triangle
= ½ x 2cm x 3cm
= 3cm²
Area of lower shaded triangle
= ½ x 2cm x 3cm
= 3cm²
Total shaded area = 3cm² + 3cm²
= 6cm²
Length of rectangle ACEF
= CD + DE
= 3cm + 2cm
= 5cm
Breadth of rectangle ACEF
= AB + BC
= 2cm + 2cm
= 4cm
Area of ACEF
= 5cm x 4cm
= 20cm²
Fraction of rectangle that is shaded
= 6/20
= 3/10
