Ratio of length to breadth
= 12:5

Difference = 12 units - 5 units
= 7 units

Realise that the remainder of the length
= length - 2 x radius of quarter circle

Remainder of breadth = breadth - 2 x radius of quarter circle

The difference remains unchanged since 2 radii are taken away from both.

Difference = 17cm - 3cm
= 14cm

So 14cm = 7 units

1 unit = 14cm ÷ 7
= 2cm

Length of cardboard
= 12units
= 12 x 2cm
= 24cm

Length of 2 radii
= 24cm - 17cm
= 7cm

Length of 1 radius
= 7cm ÷ 2
= 3.5cm

Part b :

Curved length of 4 quarter circles
= circumference of a full circle
= 2πr
= 2 x 3.14 x 3.5cm (taking π to be 3.14)
= 21.98cm

Perimeter of figure
= 17cm + 17cm + 3cm + 3cm + 21.98cm
= 61.98cm
= 62.0cm (1 d.p)

(a) Let the radius of quadrant be r cm
12u = 17 + 2r
5u = 3 + 2r
=>. 7u = 17 - 3 = 14
=>. 1u = 14/7 = 2
=>. 5u = 5 x 2 = 10
=>. 3 + 2r = 10
=>. 2r = 7
=>. r = 7/2 = 3.5 (ans)

(b) 3.14 x 7 = 21.98
17 + 3 = 20
20 x 2 = 40
21.98 + 40 = 61.98
= 62.0 (ans)
