Work backwards.
From the question we know that :
3 < x < 5
The idea is to get both sides to be the negatives of each other first.
3 - 4 < x - 4 < 5 - 4
-1 < x - 4 < 1
Then we can rewrite as :
|x - 4| < 1
From the question we know that :
3 < x < 5
